Wilbur C. Schoeller Award Recipient – 2023

Michael W. Lee, P.E.

Michael W. Lee, PE, is a Senior Principal at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Assoc., Inc. (WJE). He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering, both earned from the University of Texas at Austin.

Michael started his career in San Antonio under the mentorship of Willard E. Simpson and H. Douglas Steadman, where his design experience included the San Antonio International Airport, Municipal Auditorium, and HEB Grocery Company HQ. He then moved to Dallas where he joined Gunnin-Campbell Consulting Engineers and designed notable structures throughout the country including New York and Chicago. After joining WJE in 1994, his practice shifted to focusing on the assessment, repair, and strengthening of existing structures.

Employment at WJE provided greater opportunities to serve on professional organizations. Over the past 30 years, he has contributed to the development of numerous technical documents published by ACI and PCI, particularly related to parking structures, repair and strengthening, FRP, load testing, fire resistance, and construction tolerances. He also has been a member of ASCE Committee 7-22. His knowledge and expertise have been shared with the engineering community through more than 100 presentations, classes, and seminars. Michael has also been an invited speaker on engineering ethics on multiple occasions, including at ACI conferences. In addition, he has been an adjunct faculty professor at SMU in Dallas. Within SEAoT, he has served as President of Dallas Chapter and chair of Technical & Code Committee and is currently NCSEA delegate.

SEAoT Distinguished Service Award – 2023

Emily McCarthy, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Emily McCarthy is a Senior Consulting Engineer with Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) and has worked in their Houston office since 2015. She received her B.S. from the University of Texas at Arlington and her Ph.D. from Rice University. Her career has focused on structural investigation, analysis, and design primarily for commercial and industrial structures subjected to natural hazards, high winds, blast loads, and fire events.

Emily has been an active member of the SEAoT Houston chapter since 2016. Her start with SEAoT came when she sought support for Houston’s Engineers Alliance for the Arts program, a branch of the CSI outreach program that was started in California to help increase awareness of our great engineering profession among high school students. Emily served as the liaison between the SEAoT Houston Gulf Coast chapter and the Engineers Alliance for the Arts, coordinating volunteer schedules, student events, and funding for the outreach program. Emily stayed involved in Houston’s SEAoT Chapter, serving as the young member coordinator in 2017, then secretary in 2018, vice president in 2019, and finally president of the local chapter in 2020. She was selected by her peers from the local Houston chapter to serve as state president of SEAoT from 2021 to 2022. She has been serving on our government affairs committee since 2020 and is currently wrapping up her time as past president of the SEAoT state board.
