Endowments

JOE AND HALINA KALLABY LEADERSHIP AWARD
Joe Kallaby, a longtime SEAoT member, Past President, ten-year Chapter Director and recipient of both the Wilbur C. Scholler Award and the SEAoT Distinguished Achievement Award, has, in conjunction with his wife Halina, generously set up an endowment leadership award fund of $100,000. The objective of the award is to support the professional by encouraging students to pursue higher learning degrees in Structural Engineering.

The fund will be administered by El Paso Community Foundation, an independent nonprofit endowment management company, selected for its track record of sustained fund growth. Any costs associated with administrative time incurred by SEAoT and associated with SEAoT’s involvement in managing and coordinating the awards will be the responsibility of SEAoT and will not be charged back to the fund, thus maintaining the fund’s long-term value.

Details of the award are as follows:

A $2000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate student, pursuing a Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering, providing that the student maintains a GPA of 3.8 or better. Students must be attending an accredited Texas college or university with recognized programs in Structural Engineering.
Applicants must have previously earned a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative course GPA of 3.8 or better. In addition, preference will be given to students with an interest in improving the efficiency of offshore and onshore operations or to structural engineering students pursuing careers in flood control.

By establishing this endowment, Joe Kallaby commented that “The fund is set up from my own hard-earned money and is not the result of some windfall gain or inheritance.” His hope is that other structural engineers and engineering companies who recognize the value of higher education will set up similar endowments. This will help ensure a growing pool of funds available to support and encourage the next generation of structural engineers and leaders in the profession.
