Structural Design Engineer, Simpson Strong-Tie

Structural Design Engineer (Branch Engineer)

JOB SUMMARY

The Structural Design Engineer (a.k.a. Branch Engineer) serves as a technical expert to our sales team and to our external customers, such as specifiers, building officials, and contractors in the Southeastern U.S. territory. They are responsible for the development of presentations, technical literature content, and test programs intended to support sales, generate new products and services, and to improve or maintain existing products or services. Overnight travel is required for workshops, ride-alongs, meetings, and conferences. We are looking for an intelligent engineer, inquisitive by nature, capable of clear communication, adept at project management, and eager to create products and tools to support our sales teams’ success.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)

  • Provide technical assistance to customers, and inside and outside sales through telephone conversations, e-mails, and written documentation. (25%)
  • Create content for and conduct presentations (public speaking) discussing building code provisions, including practical design using Simpson products in front of customers like engineers, architects, builders, building officials, and our sales professionals. Assist with training inside and outside sales on new products and technical literature. (20%)
  • Develop content for new literature publications such as Catalogs, Technical Bulletins, Fliers & Engineering Letters that will promote the benefits of our products and explain technical content. Check and review all technical literature prior to publication. (15%)
  • Participate in the development of new and innovative products, product improvements, and evaluation of new applications for existing products, including idea generation, testing, and calculations. (15%)
  • Travel with outside sales to develop personal relationships with them and our customers, assist with technical support, give presentations, conduct job site calls, research/report new products/applications, and observe product installations, including after natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Our branch territory includes all or portions of 16 southeastern US states, the Caribbean, Central and South America. (15%)
  • Represent Simpson Strong-Tie at various Professional Associations and Technical Committee Meetings. (5%)
  • Special projects as assigned by the Branch Engineering Director, Engineering R&D Manager, Branch Manager or the Vice President of Engineering. (5%)

 

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

If you can do everything listed above, you’ve got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering required.
  • Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) or Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) certification required.
  • Registered Professional Civil or Structural Engineer required.
  • M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
  • 3 + years of related structural consulting experience, including design with light-framed wood as well as steel and concrete structures, practicing under a licensed PE or SE.
  • Construction Materials and Design Methods: practical working knowledge of common light-framed wood construction and concrete construction and associated design methodologies a must. Additional familiarity with masonry, steel (hot-rolled and CFS), FRP, and CLT construction and design methods a plus.
  • Product knowledge: general knowledge of Connectors and Lateral System product lines (Anchors, Fasteners, CFS, and Concrete Repair Systems a plus). General understanding of product development process from idea to launch a plus.
  • Customer focus: quickly and effectively solve customer problems and maintain productive internal and external customer relationships. Readily adjust priorities to respond to pressing and changing customer needs. Recognize potentially adverse customer reactions and develop better alternatives.
  • Self-management: set priorities, goals, and timelines to achieve maximum productivity. Manage multiple projects and competing priorities. Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment toward completing assignments in a timely manner.
  • Communication: excellent communication skills; written and verbal, proofreading, professional phone demeanor. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Enthusiastic attitude and ability to work well with others.
  • Computer Skills: excellent proficiency in Microsoft software, including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Experience with AutoCAD, BlueBeam Revu, Simpson Strong-Tie software/apps, SAP, and Smartsheet a plus.
  • Teamwork: maintain a collaborative approach in dealing with other Simpson Strong-Tie employees. Demonstrate a genuine commitment to reach mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Accountability and dependability: arrive to work on time and follow instructions, policies, and procedures. Fulfill commitments made to customers, peers, co-workers, and managers. Hold self and others accountable for measurable, high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.
  • Reading and writing: the ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.   • Reasoning: the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical, or diagram form and deal with various items of abstract and/or concrete value.

This position requires 15% domestic travel.

We are currently seeking a Structural Project Engineer who will be responsible for structural engineering analysis and design of steel, concrete, masonry, light-gage, and wood structures and will participate in the production of structural contract drawings, primarily using Revit. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for structural design solutions to meet the clients’ program requirements through building system concepts, framing concepts, lateral design, framing design, foundation design, and specifications
  • Familiar with the structural design and detailing of concrete, steel and masonry building components
  • Responsible for the structural design and engineering production of assigned projects and/or the delegation of structural engineering tasks and coordination items when being assisted by other structural team members
  • Maintain active awareness of production schedule by reviewing assigned projects for completeness/accuracy for minimum content at key project milestones
  • Produce and/or supervise the production of 3D structural Revit models using integrated Architectural and MEP Revit models for coordination. This includes providing drafting direction and guidance to the assigned Revit Designer
  • Participate in and document project meetings including, but not limited to, architectural design and coordination, geotechnical report meetings, and project coordination meetings
  • Coordinate structural construction drawings with Architectural, Civil, MEP, and other consultants as required
  • Perform Structural Construction Administration tasks including, but not limited to site visits and assessments, field observations and reports, shop drawing review and response to project RFI’s
  • Ability to manage multiple assigned projects with staggered project phases. May occasionally be responsible for multiple concurrent projects

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • P.E., and/or SE registration required – must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam
  • Three (3) to eight (8) years of progressive work experience in structural engineering, with a minimum of two (2) years of work experience in structural building engineering.
  • Professional Master of Science degrees in civil or architectural engineering (with structural focus) from an accredited program with coursework in the following:
    • Mechanics of Materials
    • Structural Analysis
    • Concrete, Masonry, and Steel Design
  • Experience in multi-story concrete and steel structures

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)

  • Work with customers and team members to identify opportunities to provide consultation in the areas of design, testing, development, and implementation of Simpson Strong-Tie’s (SST) Composite Strengthening Systems (CSS) products to meet project needs. You will work in conjunction with the CSS Engineering team to develop project-specific solutions and be responsible for communicating those solutions to customers and coordinating with other team members to ensure successful follow-through on projects from concept to completion.   • Lead and participate in technical presentations & workshops sessions to both internal and external customers to promote the CSS line. These workshops require scheduling, promotion, set-up, presentation, and take-down, as well as providing observation and suggestions for improvement. (20%)
  • Support the Southeast US Field Engineering team by establishing and maintaining relationships with key design professionals in order to obtain the specification of the CSS product line and other relevant SST products. You will actively participate in professional associations involved in new construction and/or the repair and rehabilitation of existing structures, focusing on general technical knowledge as well as the advantages and use of SST’s CSS products.   • Work with marketing and product management on the best way to introduce new products and information to the market. Work with the product management team to help in identifying new potential products and tools needed to increase sales of the product line. (5%)

  • Travel away from home with occasional overnight stays.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, design analysis, and construction cost estimates. Our core work is developing construction documents, so most of your time will be in structural design.

  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, designers, and building contractors on design and construction of projects.

  • Revit experience is a plus, but not mandatory. We do all of our drafting in Revit, so you will learn it.

  • The job requires the ability to sit (or stand) for extended periods at a desk or computer workstation.
  • Occasional travel to client facilities and project sites requires the ability to climb ladders, inspect and be physically mobile in and around client construction sites.

SEAoT Membership

SEAoT membership is offered to corporations and individuals who are interested in the practice of structural engineering and its peripheral issues. SEAoT membership runs from January – December.

However, depending when you join, your membership for the first year will be prorated so that you only pay for the remainder of the year. (Those joining between October 1 and December 31, pay full membership which covers them up to the end of December of the year following the year in which they join.)
